Ylioppilaskamerat ie. YOK is the Helsinki University student photography association. We also have non-finnish members and we gladly welcome cultural exchange. Join us on Facebook (Ylioppilaskamerat) or send an e-mail to Join our courses, workshops and other happenings!

YOK is a sub-organization of HYY (Student Union of the University of Helsinki). Founded in 1962 YOK is the oldest and the finest photography association for students in the Helsinki area. A darkroom and a photography studio with professional equipment are available for our members for a nominal price. YOK is specially famous for its first-class courses of black and white process (basic and advanced) and exhibitions. YOK also arranges courses on e.g. studio photography, workshops of varying kind, photowalks, picture nights, and much more.

The YOK membership fee is 15 euros per one calendar year or 10 euros for the autumn term. You can join as member and learn more about YOK at our reception hours, which are held at the office (almost) every monday at 7:00-7:30 p.m. You should check when the office hours are kept in our calendar on the front page. The office is situated at Hietaniemenkatu 14 A (go inside the rightmost door and two floors down to the basement). Welcome!

Most of our courses and workshops are held in Finnish. You are welcome to take part, but please let us know if you will be needing instructions in English. However, we also arrange courses in English when there’s demand for it. Mail us or write in the Facebook group!

You are also welcome to participate in our board meetings, where we plan courses, workshops and other activity. The meetings are visible in our calendar (look for “kokous”). The meetings are held at the office, unless mentioned otherwise.

We hold several courses based on demand. Our regularly offered basic courses include the following:

SLR course: You will learn to adjust an SLR camera, how different adjustments affect the picture, and learn terms such as shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, focal length, luminous intensity etc. During the course you can learn to use your own camera, or if you don’t have an SLR, get tips on buying one.

B&W film development course: You will learn how to develop a black & white film in our darkroom. You should bring a film that has been shoot, but not developed. The course fee (5 euros) includes one B&W basic film, which will be given when you pay the course. Of course you can also bring your own film, if you have one ready.

B&W printing course: You will learn how make paper prints from a black & white negative in our darkroom. You can bring your own negative, but you can also use provided negatives. Papers used in the course are included in the course fee.

Studio photography course: You will learn the basics of studio photography, use of studio lighting and camera in the studio, and how to light a person for a portrait.

Receptions are held on Mondays 19:00-19:30
